Tech Companies Spend Millions on Diverse, Thought-Provoking 2011 Super Bowl Ads
What do Darth Vader, Justin Bieber, and Eminem have in common? They all starred in one of the Super Bowl’s coveted, multi-million dollar advertisements.
This year’s Super Bowl is on-track to be the most-watched Super Bowl of all time, with an initial 71 share Nielsen rating. That means, of America’s 56 largest media markets, more than two-thirds of televisions were tuned to FOX for the big game. For advertisers and NFL fans alike, the Super Bowl is the biggest game of the year. There are a ton of eyeballs, lots of potential consumers, and many people waiting to “dissect” the best-and-worst advertisements.
Sunday’s game proved to be chock-full of technology-related advertisements, including the first use of a Twitter hashtag (by Audi) in a commercial. In case you missed the advertisements, check out a unique YouTube channel, featuring every commercial from the 2011 Super Bowl. You can have a say in America’s Favorite Super Bowl Advertisement by “Liking” Facebook Sports’ “Replay Page.”
Here’s a rundown of our Top 3 Super Bowl Technology Advertisements
No. 1: Volkswagen’s The Force. Rationale: Remote starts aren’t so “techie” these days, but when a mini-Darth thinks he’s started a car using The Force, the ad has to take the top spot!
No. 2: Best Buy’s Bieber Fever. Rationale: Any company that can incorporate Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, a buy back program, and Justin Bieber hired a decent, creative ad agency. Best Buy is right, technology DOES move fast.
No. 3: Imported from Detroit. Rationale: Technology and cars go hand-in-hand. Throw in Detroit and sprinkle a little Eminem into the mix, and you’ve got a history-making commercial about the tenacity of Michiganders.
